December Fishing Report

Well fishermen and traveling vacationers,It is already January and our season is off to a great start. The weather is in the 90's everday at the beach and the ocean has been flat calm and full of fish. There has been many a Blue Marlin around along with lot's of Dorado. We even caught a stripped Marlin last month as they are normaly rare for these water's. The month's of November,December proved normal for Dorado there were report's of boats landing 20 or more on a regular basis. One of our groups landed 2 over 50lb's in a single day. With there being so many early it is only an indication they will be here all season. Everyone came back to the dock with smiles and coolers full of fresh Mahi-Mahi.

A good friend and client Tim Randolph was down the middle of December and in 2 day's landed 2 blue marlin in the 350/500 bracket along with a dozen or more Dorado and 6 nice sailfish fishing by himself. Howard Ickes was down from Las Vegas for 3 days fishing in Golfito and managed to land a stripped Marlin,8 sailfish,6 Dorado and on his last day he wanted to catch a Rooster fish so we took him out and he landed a 50 and a 70 pounder's along with several snapper's and bottom fish. In November John and Bob were down from the Seattle area we took them to the Carribean side to do a little Tarpon fishing with Captain Eddy Brown out of Tortuguero Lodge. They first enjoyed some site seeing up at Lake Arenal and seeing the Arenal Volcano erupting everywhere with Molton Lava. If you have never seen a volcano erupt and send moltan lava down the side of the Volcano for 1000's of feet and pieces as large as houses down the side then this is a must while visiting Costa rica. Eddy was all excited as we arrived in Tortuguero he said the Ocean was flat calm and the Tarpon were rolling everywhere. Yes indeed he was right the first day we managed to land 5 nice Tarpon out of 13 bites all on conventional gear. So on our 2nd day I got out the fly rods and my standard tube flys I would use for bill fish as the water had a little color. We were there and ready and so were the fish,we admitted to 62 bites and probably missed another dozen or so. When a Tarpon bite's he is headed out of the water with your fly or lure in his mouth while you are trying to get off your rear and get the hook set he is already on his second jump. We all agreed it was much easier to hook them with my flys then with the normal lead jig's as with my tube flys there is 2 new Gamakasu hook's every time to help penetrate his hard mouth. Even Eddy came back at me last week to purchase some of my flys.We landed 26 Tarpon that particular day it was 2-3 on at a time and total confusion. John had one take his fly right at the side of the boat as he was trying to get out of the way of 2 more on already. In the 4 day's of fishing we had over 100 bites and landed almost 40 Tarpon from 70-150lb's.
